Kratie is a small town on the Mekong that is essentially famous for its proximity to one of the best spots in the world to see the rare Irrawaddy dolphins. The town itself has nice little restaurants, with some colonial buildings and a small quaint feel, very relaxed. You may notice some strange acting people around, a likely direct correlation to its reputation for organised crime and corruption. It's more of an oddity than a problem for tourists, as the people here are quite friendly. Along the riverfront is a great place to have a refreshing cold drink, while watching the big red blazing sunset behind the shoreline of the Mekong. You can also make an excellent day trip the wonderfully relaxed, back-in-time island of Koh Trong, directly opposite in the middle of the Mekong River.
