Kompong Trach

Kompong Trach is an impressive limestone cliff formation draped in vines, inhabited by monkeys and riddled with caves. Known as the White Mountain, home to Wat Kirisan, it has been a pilgrimage spot for many years and is an enjoyable day trip from Kampot or Kep. There is a big reclining Buddha in one of the caves as well as a refreshing crystal clear pool to swim in another. On arrival you will be greeted by the local kids looking to be your local guide. If you don't have a torch, they will provide one. Good shoes are recommended for exploring if you have them. The kids have learnt various facts and phrases from the official tours and are likely to be the highlight of your trip. As you may get more than one guide be sure to carry a tip for each of them. The swimming cave is 10mins ride from the main cave along the train tracks. Get directions from your new young guides. If you are looking to go deep into the caves, you should certainly hire a local guide. Getting Here: You can get here by motorbike or tuk-tuk from Kampot or Kep. From Kampot (39km), keep left at the white horse statue and continue until Kompong Trach. From there it's a short 2km potholed road to the wat and the caves. From Kep (28km) head out on the 33A until you hit the 31 and turn right which takes you to Kompong Trach. From there it's a short potholed road to the caves. From Phnom Penh the Sihanoukville train via Kampot stops at the small town of Kompong Trach, you can get a ride up from the station for $4.
