Bicycle Hire & Tours

Cycling around the temples of Angkor is a great green way to see the sights. The temple complex starts 7km down a straight road from Siem Reap, and all the roads around are completely flat, the latter being particularly useful considering the tropical climate! As the temples are relatively close together for pedal power, you can follow our itineraries just the same as if using motorised transport. Although the remote temples such as Banteay Srei and Beng Mealea (28km & 60km respectively from Bayon), can't fit the same schedule, unless you're into some serious cycling on a geared bike. Many hotels and guesthouses include free use of their bicycles into their room rentals. Several hotels around town rent bicycles from The White Bicycles for $2 a day (full list below). TWB is a charity organisation that supports clean water, education and other projects around Cambodia. There are also may bike hire shops around town hiring bicycles from $1 a day, or mountain bikes from $4 a day. Remember to take some water bottles with you, preferably insulated or at least in a bag to keep them cool. You can buy coconuts to drink for $1 at various places around the park, which is a good way to replenish electrolytes. If you are planning to bike to Angkor for sunrise/sunset, you need to wear a headlamp as traffic becomes heavy and the roads are not lit. Make sure your bike has a working blinking rear light and use it when dark. It's chaos around Phnom Bakheng and outside Angkor Thom South Gate just after sunset, so be extra careful if riding there. Drivers may not be the most considerate so always ride with caution around traffic, and best to wear a helmet on the ride down from Siem Reap to Angkor area. Once in the park traffic is pretty mild but your helmet can also double up as a sunhat! Remember not to stray too far off the road or paths, just in case of landmines. Unsecured valuables in the front basket are at risk of being stolen. Bring lots of sunscreen as you will be out in the sun a lot! You can get various guided cycling tour options with a sunrise tour from around US$40.
