Massage on Ko Samui
Nobody comes to Koh Samui just to enjoy a massage, but if you happen to be a massage 'junkie' or would like to find what all the fuss is about, you couldn't come to a better place. There are literally hundreds of massage shops scattered right across the island, with approximately 60% of them in or near Chewang beach, another 20% in the Lamai beach area, and the remaining 20% spread around the other smaller beaches along the northern and southern coast. If that isn't enough, there are wandering masseurs along every beach, who will massage you where you lay, or more likely, take you to a nearby secluded and shady area which is cordoned off for the purpose. Or you can pay a little more and try one of the trendy spa and massage establishments and resorts that have sprung up across the island and also offer traditional Thai massages. Broadly, you will have a choice of three different types of massage; namely: foot massage; Thai traditional massage; and oil massage. The straight Thai massage is by far the most strenuous, and masseurs often use their knees, elbows and feet as well as their hands on different areas of your body during the massage. Some elements of Thai massage have their roots in yoga and Ayurveda. The ancient art of real Thai massage is famous throughout the world, and the practice is deeply embedded into Thai culture. When carried out by a properly trained masseur, a Thai massage can be a wonderful remedy for your aches and pains and it can often cure back and other joint pains that may have been troubling you for years. Traditional massages usually cost in the region of 200-300B, foot massages 250-350B, and oil massages 300-400B. ‘Happy endings’ are offered at some establishments, you can usually tell from the behaviour of the girls sitting outside, and you are well advised to be sure what you are getting into before you commit yourself to willing hands. Most places are massage only and are likely to be a better masseuse, as they are focused only on massage. Here are a few recommendations that should provide a professional and respectable service.
