Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu

Although this temple is worth a visit in its own right, the main reason to go to the top of Doi Kong Mu mountain is to enjoy the stupendous views of the entire Mae Hong Son Valley. You have two choices - walk up, or drive up. Either way, the views are best either during the early morning - when the valley is immersed in a sea of mist - or at sundown when the views are quite extraordinary. If you elect to go by foot, take the track on the west side of town that leads to Wat Phra Non temple which can be clearly seen at the base of the mountain. You might want to take a quick look at the reclining Buddha inside this temple before tackling the steep staircase which winds up the hill to Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu, located at the summit, some 1500m (5000ft) above sea level. Alternatively, you can rent a motorbike or drive there by car. The temple dates back to 1874 and has two large white chedis, built in the Shan architectural style. One chedi contains the ashes of a revered Burmese monk and the other contains the ashes of the province's first governor. At the crown of the hill is an ubosot (ordination hall), in front of which is a large standing Buddha image, with small chedi and several cenotaphs. There is also a café and some souvenir stalls. The entire valley is visible with the city nestled cosily down at the centre. On a clear day, you can even see Burma in the far distance. One the finest views you will experience during your time in Thailand.
