Markets

The town of Mae Hong Son may not exactly be jam-packed with things to do, but for those of you who love browsing in traditional Thai markets, there are no less than three markets to satisfy your cravings. Night Bazaar or Walking Street Market Opens every night from around sundown to 10pm, near to the temple side of Nong Jong Kham Lake, along Pradit Jongkham Road. This is one of the better "Walking Street" markets in Thailand, packed with a wide range of food delicacies, as well as local handicrafts, Hill Tribe garments, trinkets, snacks, drinks, and fresh fruit. At present, this market is only open from October to March. Morning Market When we say morning - we mean early! As it opens in the wee hours and closes at 9am. As a consequence, not too many visitors make it to this market, which is located near Wat Hua Wiang on Sihanat Bamrung Road. If you do manage to wipe the sand out of your eyes, or if you are a bit of an insomniac, you will be rewarded with the age-old scene of locals busily engaged in the buying and selling of locally grown food and fresh produce. If you make it well before it well before it closes, you can take a seat for an unusual breakfast. Try the typical Shan-style breakfast snacks such as Burmese noodles with chickpea porridge, or deep-fried chickpea flour cakes and tofu. Sunday Market This is another of these 'rotating' travelling markets that set up in a different town on each day of the week. Sunday is the turn of Mae Hong Son, and the market can be found on the road to Mae Sariang. It opens early in the morning and closes around midday; and consists mainly of vendors selling freshly grown vegetables, fruit and meat from mats laid out on the pavement or from rickety wooden stalls. Some vendors simply sell from the back of their pick-ups. As ever, there are plenty of snacks or cooked food that you can take away.
