Wat Chong Klang & Chong Kham

They are magical by day or night. These twin white and gold temples with green roofs and yellow edgings, located on the banks of Nong Jong Kham Lake, are a sight not to be missed. Visit them at dawn, with the mist coming off the lake and take a snap of the temples with their shimmering watery reflections. Then return at night, when the temples are lit up, and the whole scene is alive with the night market, food stalls, and live music. Soak in the atmosphere and take another incredible pic for the album. Located in the same grounds, Wat Jong Kham was built in 1827, and Wat Jong Klang followed in 1857. Both are in the delicate Burmese Shan style. Wat Jong Kham, the older of the two, is best known for its massive wooden throne, and Wat Jong Klang is distinctive for its magnificent white and gold Chedi. Inside the Wihaan (main hall) of Wat Jong Klang are many glass paintings relating the 'Jakata Tales' - Indian stories about the lives of the Buddha. These were painted by Thai Yai Shan artists from Mandalay and were brought to the temple in the middle of 19th century. There is also a small museum here containing teak figurines and statues. Some of these 100-year old Burmese dolls depict humans and animals in the "Wheel of Life" in rather grisly detail. Another unusual feature of Wat Jong Klang is the huge wicker-work Buddha Image that sits in the Wihaan. Open: 6:00am - 6:00pm.
