Why Go

Prasat Phanom Rung, together with Muang Tam, are the two most well preserved and spectacular Khmer ruins in Thailand. These two religious temples are located in Buri Ram province, 50km north of the Cambodian border and they once formed part of the great Angkor Empire, which ruled the region over a thousand years ago. Prasat Phanom Rung has been restored to almost pristine condition and is the largest Khmer monument in Thailand. Built between the 9th and 11th centuries, it sits some 400m above the plains and contains a spectacular staircase, exquisitely carved lintels, a beautiful temple and palace. Prasat Muang Tam is just 8km from Prasat Phanom Rung and is certainly worthy of your time while visiting Prasat Phanom Rung.

Why Not

These ruins are a bit out of the way of any town you are likely to stay in unless coming especially for these ruins. This is one for ancient ruin enthusiasts.

To Know

Both sites date back to the ninth century, but successive kings have added to them during the ensuing two hundred years, so much of what you see today dates from the 11th century. The only accommodation to be found relatively close by is in the small town of Nang Rong 28km away. You can also make a day trip from Buri Ram which is about 80km to the north.
